There’s a moment every year that makes the early mornings, the sponsor calls, and the sign-hanging worth it. This year it happened right in our lobby, when we handed the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan a check for $8,250 — every dollar raised at our 4th Annual FADM Charity Golf Outing.

Take a look at the faces in this photo. These are the men and women who keep the Federazione alive — the ones who show up for every festa, every scholarship dinner, every Sunday that needs a few more hands. My parents came to Detroit from Abruzzo with a suitcase and a work ethic, and organizations like FADM are the reason kids like me grew up knowing exactly where we came from. Handing them this check, in front of the Salvati name on the wall, is about as full-circle as it gets.

By the numbers

On Tuesday, July 14, 110 golfers on 28 teams took over Greystone Golf Club in Washington Township. We had sponsors at every level, a raffle table that kept growing right up until the shotgun start, and a dinner where nobody left hungry — this is an Italian event, after all. The $8,250 goes straight to the Federazione’s bank account. Not a penny stops anywhere in between. That’s how we run these outings, and that’s how we always will.

The people who made it happen

An outing like this doesn’t come together because of one guy with a clipboard. It comes together because sponsors say “I’m in” before I finish the sentence. Because friends fill a foursome and then find a second one. Because the TSiG team and our outing committee work the registration table, the raffle, and the money bags like it’s their own family’s event — because in a lot of ways, it is.

To every sponsor, golfer, volunteer, and raffle donor: thank you. You didn’t just play golf. You put scholarship money in the hands of Abruzzese kids and kept a piece of the homeland alive here in Michigan.
